FAQ - Caring Cove Hospice

Hospice provides palliative care to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient and family. Hospice focuses on the relief of pain and symptoms which may accompany a life-limiting illness.

Hospice services are provided primarily in the patient’s home by an interdisciplinary team of professionals and volunteers. Hospice services may also be provided to the patient in a skilled nursing facility or assisted living facility if that is where they reside.

Hospice services are available both on a scheduled and an as-needed basis, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Hospice services may include nursing; physician care; social work; spiritual and bereavement counseling; physical, occupational and speech therapy; volunteer services; medical supplies and equipment; and medications prescribed for the relief of pain and symptoms related to the terminal diagnosis and related conditions.

Hospice services can be in any location in which the patient resides.

Hospice care is available to those with private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid.  Hospice is also covered as part of the Veteran’s Administration.  It is important to note that each patient and family have the ability to choose which hospice provider they want to use.  At Caring Cove Hospice, we work with our patients as individuals.  We want our patients and our families to feel as such – FAMILY.  Our team of dedicated professionals will work together to make YOU a priority.

There are several situations that call for hospice care including a terminal illness or diagnosis, rapidly declining health and/or the decision to forego treatments that will prolong life.  Our interdisciplinary team will assist the patient and their family with any and all needs associated with this process.  From medical care, to bathing, to dietary recommendations, Caring Cove Hospice looks to care for the whole patient: mind, body and spirit.

Hospice is a wonderful service that can add quality to your life.  Hospice care is all about living comfortably.  At Caring Cove Hospice we like to say that Hospice is where peace and tranquility meet compassionate care. Patients have a myriad of services at their disposal to improve quality-of-life including physician and nursing care, home health aides, social workers and bereavement support, and pain management as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

Many hospices are run by corporations, but Caring Cove Hospice is different.  Caring Cove Hospice is a local company.  There is no “red tape” or waiting on the chain of command for approvals.  In fact, Caring Cove Hospice was started by local medical professionals who have extensive experience in caring for hospice patients.  They saw the good and the not-so-good and believed that there was a better way to provide hospice care in our community. Caring Cove Hospice recognizes the importance of answering caregiver questions with patience and thoroughness.  We understand that this can be a tough time for caregivers as they help their loved ones navigate the hospice process.  At Caring Cove Hospice, we are here not only for our patients but for the caregivers as well.

Yes. It is completely your choice as to which hospice provides your care.  Moreover, if you no longer feel that you need hospice services, or that the hospice you are currently using is not meeting your needs, you can request a discharge at any time.  As long as you meet hospice requirements, you may come back to hospice at any time.

No, hospice is a whole-being service, meaning that we take care of the whole person: body, mind and spirit.  We also work to support caregivers.  Our inter-disciplinary team includes physicians, nurses, home health aides, bereavement support, social workers, and pain management as well as physical, occupational and speech therapy.  At Caring Cove Hospice we also take care of any medications, as well as medical supply needs such as: toileting supplies; oxygen tanks; beds, shower chairs; and the like.

No, hospice doesn’t just address patient needs but also the needs of the patient’s loved ones.  We continue to support our caregivers and families with emotional and spiritual support for over a year after the patient passes.  We care for our patients AND their loved ones as they go through the grieving process.

Hospice does not require you to sign a DNR.  In fact, it is the patient’s right to choose the level of interventions they would like to have.  Caring Cove Hospice recognizes that all persons have the right to make decisions relating to their own medical treatment, including the right to accept or refuse medical care.  Valid advance directives, such as living wills, Durable Power of Attorney, DNR and Do Not Intubate (DNI) orders will be followed to the extent permitted and required by law.  This is a sensitive and personal choice that should be made by the patient alongside their loved ones.

Hospice can be appropriate for cancer patients with a terminal diagnosis or who choose not to receive further treatments, however hospice care is not just for patients with cancer.   In fact, hospice patients could be diagnosed with stroke, heart disease, lung disease, or coma, to name just a few.  If a patient has a life-limiting illness or terminal diagnosis, no matter what it might be, then they are likely to qualify for hospice services.

A referral from a medical professional is not needed to receive hospice care. Hospice care can be requested by the patient or patient’s family member.  If you or your loved one are interested in hospice services from Caring Cove Hospice, please reach out.  We will contact your physician to obtain records and then review those to determine eligibility.

You may continue to see your own physicians while on hospice care. Caring Cove Hospice will work closely with your physicians to integrate your care.  You may also choose to have our Medical Director as your attending physician. The most important takeaways are that it is YOUR choice, and Caring Cove Hospice will provide the highest quality of patient care, working with the physicians YOU choose.

As long as you qualify for hospice services, you may be on hospice for longer than six months. It is best to sign up as soon as possible as hospice care improves your quality of life. In fact, people on hospice lived an average of one month longer than those not on hospice, according to a study that was sponsored by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) in 2007. As part of the Caring Cove Hospice family, you will receive care from many different disciplines including physician and nursing services, home health aides, bereavement support, social worker support, spiritual support, pain management, and other therapies as needed.  Our care team looks to support the whole patient: mind, body and spirit.

Hospice services are recurrent which means you will have medical team as well as support services throughout the week on a regular schedule, but the hospice team will not be there 24 hours a day.  At Caring Cove Hospice we are always just a phone call away for any questions, concerns or emergent issues that our patients and families may have, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Additionally, if patients need continual care, we can recommend providers for such support.
